Disasters continue to occur in our country and around the world.  Every semester my students discuss the ramifications of politics and its role in emergency management.  Most students don’t understand why politics affect emergency management, but all understand that when government money is involved, politics will be involved.

With the most recent round of horrific disasters, both natural and man-made, we again see politics taking center stage and disaster management and recovery as a pawn in the game.  Let us all hope that as we move forward that several things occur:

1) Disasters spare ALL human life

2) No responders die in the line of duty

3) Senseless acts of violence are forever history and never current news, and

4) Politics are left out of Disaster and Emergency Management.
